Understading Facebook & Social Media

I will continue my quest in 2008 to get more of my friends and family onto the World Wide Web. I want to get people blogging, sharing and staying in touch. I think that is an important part of a family that lives abroad and has friend and family across the world. We have all experienced moving away from friends and family and slowly feeling how you lose the day-to-day casual contact, random meetings or local phone calls gets less frequent and your excuse is simply “we have grown apart”. That might be true in some cases but for the most part it is because you feel the distance makes it harder to communicate on a regular basis about trivial matters and on your own terms. That is exactly what Facebook offers. The ability to communicate on your own terms with the people you know, but are too far away for the normal daily contact, friend and family around the globe. Several people I know has expressed fears over Facebook, no this is not for me, its unsafe etc. One of the most common misconceptions of what Facebook is all about. People hear fright stories in the news and on TV about people’s identity being stolen or losing your personal data. The problem here is lack of understanding about how it works.
Let me explain.
1) Unlike MySpace where everyone can see your profile, when using Facebook you decide who you will let into your community of friends, don’t let in strangers.
2) Common sense should stop you from adding the most vital information about yourself. Don’t add addresses and phone numbers for everyone to see
3) When opening up your profile on the Facebook application will try and flog a local network, just say no to that! That way only the people you want to communicate with will be able too.
You might be surprised to find that lots of old friends, colleagues and even school mates you had forgotten all about are on there and they will find it fun to hear from you again…
So the general message here is, it is safe is to be on Facebook, if you stick to the basics, don’t invite random people into your social network, choose your Facebook friend with care and you will be just fine and have fun in the process..
If Facebook is good enough for the Danish prime Minister it must be ok right ?
